Metropolitan Council

For the past several years, we have partnered with the Metropolitan Council on the Reducing Water Use on Twin Cities Lawns through Research, Education, and Outreach project. Recently, the Metropolitan Council earned a national award for Excellence in Promoting WaterSense Labeled Products from the U.S.

The UMN Turfgrass Science team will be at the MidCity Farmers Market on Wednesday, October 9, 2024 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. located at 693 Raymond Avenue, St. Paul, MN.

The summers of 2021-2023 presented significant challenges for those managing lawns or turfgrass with drought conditions, extreme temperatures, and a lack of rainfall. Many homeowners likely relied heavily on underground irrigation systems to maintain healthy grass or to follow municipal odd/even watering restrictions. Even smart irrigation systems with rain sensors, soil sensors, or weather-based controllers allowed irrigation based on weather and soil conditions due to the lack of rain.

The UMN Turfgrass Science team will be at the Brown's Creek Watershed District Community Event on Saturday, September 21, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The location is Brown’s Creek Park (8312 Neal Ave N Stillwater, MN 55082). 

Please stop by and see the educational display on lawn care and irrigation best management practices. Our team will be there to answer your questions regarding low-input lawn maintenance, how to manage your lawn water use or just about anything else relating to lawns. 

The UMN Turfgrass Science team will be at the Linwood Family Fun Day this Saturday, September 7, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The address is 22817 Typo Creek Drive NE, Stacy, MN 55079.

We often get questions about which grass to buy for a home lawn. There are several different options for cool-season turfgrasses grown in Minnesota; which you choose will depend on your site, how you use your lawn, how much maintenance you want to do, and maybe even aesthetics.  

The UMN Turfgrass Science team will be at the Camden Neighborhood Sunday Market at Dancing Bear Chocolate this Sunday, August 18, 2024 from 9:00am to 2:00pm.

The Turfgrass Science team will be at the 2024 Minnesota State Fair starting Thursday, August 22 through Labor Day, September 2. We will be there all 12 days from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
