Hello everyone! I am Monika Kajal, originally from India. I was trained as a molecular and RNA biologist. I earned my Ph.D. from Panjab University, where I studied microRNAs and degradome in medicinal plants. I then moved to Carnegie Science (Stanford) for my postdoctoral research, working first on green microalgae and later on fungi (at CEMS, UMN). Working across such different organisms has given me a broad, comparative view of biology. Alongside my lab research, I have long been interested in what happens to science after it leaves the lab; how discoveries reach the public and create commercial value. This led me to study the technology transfer ecosystem across India.
In August 2026, I joined the Department of Horticultural Science at the University of Minnesota to work with Dr. Michael Barnes. My research focuses on the socio-cultural dimensions of genetically engineered incompatible turfgrass, including how different stakeholders perceive and respond to this technology. More broadly, I am interested in turfgrass systems as a meeting point between the natural and social sciences.
At the heart of my work is one question: how does science shape, and get shaped by, the scientist, public, policymakers, and decision-makers? I am excited to learn from the group and to join the lively scientific and social conversations here.
